The nature of the universe has puzzled and intrigued humans since they first looked up to the heavens. The invention of the telescope in the 17th century allowed us to look much closer at our neighbouring stars and planets. Rocket technology of the 20th century enabled space probes and astronauts in space vehicles to be launched beyond Earth’s atmosphere to reach further into deep space. Photographs and samples retrieved from these missions have resulted in a quantum leap in our knowledge and understanding of the solar system and its origins.
